Warning Signs Your Pool Equipment Needs Repair

Is the pool a bit cloudy these days? You may have noticed your pump putting out some unfamiliar noises. And you are left to question if what seems a minor matter will end up costing you a lot to put right.

One does not see pool equipment just conk out; there are usually telltale signs beforehand. The earlier you put them to rights, the better for your wallet. What follows are the red flags we are apt to come across on a service call.

Strange Noises From the Pump

A pool pump is meant to be a quiet hum in the background. Screeching or grinding is not part of that. A high-pitched squeal can be indicative of bearings that have seen better days, while a rattle may be a sign of a loose part or debris in the housing. Some owners make a habit of putting up with it until the pump gives up altogether. There is no point in that; a straining pump will not last much longer.

Water That Will Not Stay Clear

You are on top of the chemicals and the filter is running, yet the water is green or hazy? Then the equipment is likely to blame. It could be a filter that is clogged or beyond its time, valves not doing their job of directing flow, a chlorinator or salt cell that is off, or even air leaks that are letting in bubbles rather than clean water. For one who knows where to look, such problems are easy enough to put a finger on.

Leaks on the Equipment Pad

There should be no puddles by the heater, pump or filter. What is a drip now could be washing out the ground under your equipment or cracking a housing down the road. If the water level is going down quicker than evaporation would account for, the plumbing is suspect. Any wet spots or fittings that are dripping merit attention.

Weak or No Water Flow

Try the return jets with your hand. A lack of force means poor circulation, which in turn means dead spots for algae and chemicals that do not get where they need to go. This is often the result of a dirty filter, a skimmer basket in need of clearing, an air leak or a pump that has lost its prime. Clean it and if the flow is still not there, have the equipment looked at.

Energy Bills on the Rise

An inefficient piece of equipment will show up on your power bill. When nothing else in the home has changed but the cost has gone up, an older single-speed pump or a motor that is having a hard time of it could be the cause. An upgrade will more than cover itself in the long run with the savings.

Heater Problems

When a heater will not fire or is throwing error codes and short-cycling, do not keep at it with restarts. With gas, electricity and water all in one spot, this is a job for a technician who is qualified to handle it.
